Is that a dog or a coyote? This is a debate that a section of American internet users have been stuck on for a while. And what was at the root of it?
A small caramel-colored creature that resembled a mix of a dog, fox, and coyote.
A few months back, officials from the Dallas Police Department found this very young creature lying next to a garbage dump.
Discovery and Debate
They couldn’t figure out its true breed since they were as confused as the next person. Ultimately, they decided to take care of it until it got picked up by Dallas Animal Services.

As soon as the pictures of the animal were splashed all over the internet, it caused a storm. People on social media websites were engaged in debate and speculation over its true breed—whether it was a canine or a fox.
And to add to the theories, the little critter did look extremely similar to a coyote pup. Although Jacqui Sutherland, an officer at Dallas Animal Services, told WFAA that she strongly suspected that it was a domestic animal.

“My money is on domestic. If I had money, it would be on domestic,” she told WFAA.
The DNA Test Reveal
Finally, as all the debates came to a head, the animal services decided to take Toast (that’s what they named her!) for a DNA test at Embark Vet. After two weeks, the results were out and it finally put the raging debate to rest.
It was revealed that Toast was a DOG! Yes, she was a mutt or mongrel—i.e., a mix of various dog breeds. According to the DNA test, she was 42% German Shepherd, 20% Australian Cattle Dog and 38% Siberian Husky.

“Toast is a DOG! As we suspected, she turned out to be a beautiful little mutt,” Dallas Animal Services declared in their Facebook post.
With her true species finally being revealed, all that was left is to find her a beautiful home where she would be taken care of her whole life. Following the days after the identity reveal, applications for adoption were put up.
Not surprisingly, the response was humongous and she was quickly adopted by a loving family that was eager to have her.
Our hearts are very happy at the thought of precious little Toastie being adopted, but there are many more like her— other dogs who are around in that area and are awaiting adoption.
As Embark Vet wrote in one of their social media posts, “Toast has found a home, but the Dallas area is overwhelmed with dogs and many large-breed dogs and moms with pups are looking for fosters and forever homes.”
We echo that sentiment.
