Did you know that this little dog comes in a variety of sizes, facial shapes, and coat colors? Well, that’s what we’re going to discuss today. So, prepare to take yourself on a memorable reading journey through the Pom’s fluffy fur. Now, don’t let it tickle you!

A Quick Peek Into the World of Pomeranian Dogs

According to experts, Pomeranians descended from larger, sturdy Spitz sled dogs. They had been selectively bred down in size in the Pomerania region (hence the name) of Germany and Poland.

Their popularity grew significantly after Queen Victoria discovered the breed in the 19th century. In today’s world, the breed is recognized by kennel clubs and has become a popular toy breed.

And it is mainly known for its charming, spirited personality.

Here are some info tidbits on this little dog:

  • Arctic ancestors: The Pomeranian’s ancestors were way larger and more powerful. They were Spitz-variety sled dogs from the Arctic. Breeds such as the Samoyed and Alaskan Malamute also come from this region.
  • Size reduction: So, if the ancestors of this dog were so huge, why are they so small? The answer lies in two words: Selective breeding. In Pomerania, the original larger dogs were selectively bred to become smaller. With time, they evolved into the “Zwergspitz” or dwarf Spitz.
  • Royal endorsement: Long after, this breed gained widespread fame when it was introduced to England by Princess Sophie Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Queen Victoria’s love for this breed increased its popularity. And ultimately, small poms became fashionable and in demand.
  • Global popularity: The Pomeranian finally became an official breed in the United States. It was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888. After that, it quickly became popular in the United States as well.
  • Historical significance: Beyond royalty, the breed has a history of service. These dogs were used as messengers and gas detection dogs during the World Wars.

What Makes Pomeranian Dogs So Irresistibly Cute?

It’s not just their pint-sized charm; it’s the perfect blend of fluff, attitude, and personality packed into one tiny body.

These little furballs manage to melt hearts wherever they go, thanks to their teddy bear faces, feathery coats, and expressive eyes that seem to sparkle with curiosity and sass.

From their bouncy walk to their proud, confident demeanor, every little thing about a Pomeranian screams adorable.

They love strutting around like royalty or curling up in your lap. Poms have an uncanny ability to capture attention and affection instantly.

That Fluffy Double Coat

Pomeranians are considered irresistibly cute owing to a variety of reasons. Well, for one, their fluffy double coat can give you an irresistible urge to pet them.

Since they were bred in the Arctic, they naturally developed this thick coat to keep themselves warm. And these modern-day tiny poms look like fluffballs.

In fact, they resemble the ‘pom poms’ used by cheerleaders. Isn’t that a cute comparison? Well, it suits the dog’s name as well.

They have a unique combination of features, including their compact size, fluffy double coat, and animated, expressive faces.

These characteristics give them a perpetually puppy-like, teddy bear, or fox-like appearance that many people find endearing.

The Pomeranian’s fluffy and soft undercoat looks beautiful. When topped by a long, harsher outer coat. They also have a plume-like tail that arches over their back, which adds to their glamorous look.

They have an alert, foxy face with small, erect, triangular ears. They also have almond-shaped eyes, which give them an intelligent and inquisitive expression.

And this seems to convey a sense of mischievous happiness.

Tiny Size, Big Personality

In spite of their small size, these dogs have a bold and vivacious personality. They often carry themselves with a proud demeanor. They are also similar to the Chihuahua in the sense that they act ‘bigger than their size.’

They are intelligent and alert dogs. And also, they simply love being the center of attention. This intelligence, combined with their stubborn streak, makes a heady combo.

These sneaky little babies can be manipulative and charming in order to get what they want.

They are very lively and energetic dogs that love to play and perform tricks. Their enthusiasm for life is contagious and adds to their appeal.

Playful and Loyal Companions

It’s true that these dogs are very independent in nature. However, that doesn’t stop them from forming strong bonds with their families.

Not to mention the fact that they are very loyal companions. They are known for being affectionate and loving, offering kisses and cuddles to their owners.

Different Types of Pomeranian Dogs You Should Know

When it comes to Pomeranians, there’s more variety than you might expect from such a tiny breed. These adorable fluffballs come in different looks, sizes, and even mixes, each with its own unique charm.

Types by Face Shape

Pomeranians may share the same fluffy charm, but their facial structures set them apart. Each has its own signature cuteness that dog lovers adore.

  • Fox Face: Most of the dogs in this breed belong to this variety. As the name suggests, it has a resemblance to foxes.
  • Teddy Bear Face: This one has a very short muzzle and rounded features. You can say this one is the cutest breed. It is often described as having a “smooshed-in” appearance.
  • Baby Doll Face: This type has a muzzle that is shorter than the fox face. However, it is not as short as the teddy bear face. On the other hand, this one has a more “dainty” and round-faced appearance.

Types by size

Even though Pomeranians are small by nature, their sizes can still vary quite a bit. There’s a size to suit every preference and lifestyle.

  • Standard Pomeranian: This is the standard size for the breed.
  • Miniature/Micro/Teacup/Pocket Pomeranian: We know the Pom is already a very small dog. But this version is even smaller, with a height of less than 6 inches and weighing just a few pounds.
  • Throwback Pomeranian: This is a larger type of Pomeranian. It’s sometimes a mixed breed or a dog designed to be the original size of its ancestors.

Types by coat and color

One of the most captivating things about Pomeranians is their wide range of coat colors and patterns.

  • Solid Color: As the name suggests, this one has a single color coat. It can be orange, red, white, black, or chocolate.
  • Parti-Color: A predominantly white coat with patches of another color.
  • Merle: This is a marbled coat pattern.
  • Brindle: A coat with a striped pattern.

Types by hybrid status (Pomeranian mixes)

Pomeranians are also popular in designer dog mixes, creating some of the most charming hybrids around. These Pom mixes combine the best traits of both parents.

  • Cockeranian: This is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Cocker Spaniel.
  • Dameranian: This one is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Dachshund.
  • Pomachon: A dog created by a cross between a Pomeranian and a Bichon Frise.

Caring for Your Pomeranian Dog

Having a pet requires daily and regular care, and a Pom is no exception to this rule. Here are some tips for caring for your little angel:

Diet and exercise

  • Feed a high-quality, age-appropriate diet: It is important to ensure they are receiving the required nutrition. And make sure you always feed them fresh water.
  • Provide daily exercise: The Pom is not a breed that requires intense exercise. Take it out for walks two to three times a week. And provide them enough playtime to keep them physically and mentally stimulated.
  • Avoid overexertion: Do not work them too much, especially in hot weather. Bear in mind that they have a thick coat, which can make them overheat.
  • Do not let them jump from heights: Be careful to keep them away from the edges of terraces and open balconies.

Grooming

  • Brush their coat regularly: Their thick coat requires regular brushing, at least 3-4 times a week.  Be sure to use the right tools to prevent tangles and mats. Also, brush daily during shedding seasons.
  • Bathing Habits: Bathe them about once a month. No need to bathe them daily. Once a month will do. Just make sure you’re using a high-quality, breed-specific shampoo.
  • Ensure their teeth are brushed regularly: Brush their teeth regularly with breed-specific paste. This is important for maintaining oral hygiene. Use a vet-recommended toothbrush.
  • Trim their nails: Long nails risk scratching someone. So trim them to keep them short.

Health and training

  • Schedule regular veterinary visits: You want your pooch to be healthy, right? So take them for regular wellness checks.
  • Puppy-proof your home: This is important to save your home from damage. And be cautious of potential predators when they are outside.
  • Train them with consistency: Train them by using a host of positive reinforcement methods. They require a lot of ‘rewards’ for each step they take forward. This is important, as they can be very strong-willed.

Why Pomeranian Dogs Make Perfect Family Pets

These dogs make great family pets since they are playful, happy, and have strong personalities. They not only provide good companionship but also are protective by nature. They can be a bit stubborn, but the love they can give you is totally worth the trouble.
